You know what sucks? Missing multiple workout days in a row and falling out of your routine! All of that hard work and dedication thrown off course in the matter of days. For me, one of the easiest ways to fall out of a routine is not because of laziness (that happens too…) but because I am traveling. Whether it is traveling for work (hello, three week campaign bus tours!) or traveling to visit family or going out of a town for a wedding – finding time to work out can be a real struggle. After a quick weekend trip out of town to visit my in-laws I was inspired to write this blog post. Here are a few of my tips and tricks for staying motivated and working out while on the road:
- Share your goals. Tell your friends and family that you want to “go to the gym tomorrow morning” or “run 2 miles tonight”. Whatever it is – share it. Once you share it you set up an accountability system and someone else might join you. You also might find a new source of inspiration! For example, we visit Max’s parents once a month (we try to at least!) and both my mother-in-law and father-in-law are enrolled in a cross fit gym. Their workouts are SO intense so how can I not go out for a run while they are out busting is out at cross fit!?
- Pack your running shoes. Just do it. They are bulky and take up a ton of room in your carry on but you need them to run and hit up the gym. Plus, if you pack them you will feel compelled to use them. Pack your workout clothes while you are at it 😉
- Map out your runs ahead of time. Last month I wrote a couple reviews on some great running apps. These apps allow you to map out your runs ahead of time so that you can plan a 4 mile run before you ever start your trip. I am personally a huge fan of MapMyRun.
- Check out your hotel amenities. As the front desk concierge for advice on nearby running trails or free fitness classes in the area. You can also get information on hotel gyms or nearby gyms or YMCA’s that they have partnerships with if they don’t have a gym of their own.
- Think outside of the running box. Pack a Jillian Michaels workout DVD, YouTube a yoga or Pilates channel like Blogilates, find workouts you can do from your hotel room, or explore your new city by renting a bike. Most hotels have pools and swimming is another great option. Last year I was on a 2 week long bus tour for work in the dead of winter and packed online in a carry-on. I wanted to save space and running during a snow storm in Michigan sounded like a horrible idea so I packed my swimsuit and swam each night in the hotel pool. It was small – but I could get laps in and run in the water since it was so shallow at most hotels.
- Watch your food choice. It’s really easy to take a step away from your healthy eating habits and have one too many drinks or one too many cheat days while traveling. You also have less control over what you eat and where you get it!
- Find a local running store. Near by a running store? Check it out! They’ll have great advice on running trails, running meet ups, and courses in the area. You might even be able to sign up for a local race to compete in while you are there!
- Stay hydrated. Air planes can be horrible for hydration so be sure to stay away from the coffee and stick with water. TSA sucks, but ask your flight attendant for water and keep tipping it back.
- Be safe. You are in a new town in an area unfamiliar to you so be sure to check in with your hotel concierge to figure out a safe route. Be sure to run in day light, with a cell phone, a form of ID, maybe even road mace.
